Op basis hiervan voert Prorail het beheer en onderhoud uit. Inzicht in de kwaliteit en afwijkingen wordt verkregen door middel van inspecties. Voor het eenduidig uitvoeren van de inspecties is er een inspectierichtlijn opgesteld, de RLN00400. In deze richtlijn staat omschreven, wat er moet worden geinspecteerd, hoe de inspecties moeten worden uitgevoerd en in welk format de rapportages moeten worden aangeleverd. Inzicht in kwantiteiten en kenmerken van de gebouwen wordt verkregen door middel van visuele opnames. In het systeem SAP is vastgelegd welke kwantiteiten en kenmerken van Rail Gebonden Gebouwen moeten worden opgenomen en op welke wijze de data moet worden aangeleverd.
