The Health Visitor Implementation Plan contains core aims to "improve opportunities to use the full range of health visitor skills and re-emphasise health visitors as key public health professionals" and to "ensure a strong focus on responding to differential needs and improving outcomes, and that systems promote effective join-up between services in ways that best meet local needs". Postpartum depression is currently poorly identified and therefore often untreated, and is a significant area for public health improvement. Health visitors support families from pregnancy through to a child's fifth birthday, and have a distinctive skill mix and role in many families' lives; they are therefore uniquely placed to offer advice and identify where additional support may be needed. Further training health visitors to identify and treat perinatal depression, including making referrals to specialist counselling, is a key driver of the Health Visitor Programme aims set out above. We anticipate that the organisation will have much of the knowledge required already in-house. Any additional expertise required should be attained through the organisations networks and contacts. The training shall be developed and delivered by an organisation with significant proven expertise in the field of public health nursing, through academic or professional experience. All those developing and delivering the training should have a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing/Health Visiting qualification. The training should include: How to recognise perinatal depression, including links to postpartum OCD Appropriate next steps i.e. treatment, referral Sufficient understanding to pass-on the knowledge to peers and students The training should be linked to other appropriate models of practiceAdjudicaciones
