Since then, it has expanded to over 15 000 students and has over 30 academic departments and research centres. This procurement is divided into Lots, which are outlined below: To continue the redevelopment of Heslington West, the University is now looking to develop a new building for the Biology Department and as well as a general Teaching Building. LOT 1 Biology Phase 2 Build. The proposed building is to be constructed off the north elevation of Biomedical Phase 1 recently completed in August 2014. A new atrium is included in the current proposal to be constructed as part of this project including new bridge links from both first and second floors. A key part of the brief will be to remove the existing external fire escape staircase from Biomedical Phase 1 to time in with the new atrium and bridge links and a new fire escape plan. This switch over will need to carried out almost seamlessly to prevent any downtime of the existing Phase 1 facility. It is the University's intention to procure the successful candidate for LOT 1 via a single stage competitive tender process (short-listed candidates only). LOT 2 New Teaching Building. The project is to provide a facility for centrally timetabled general teaching space for students across the campus. This will be in a series of seminar rooms and large lecture theatre(s). The building will also need to provide ample milling waiting space for students at changeover periods. It will also need to provide social and informal study space. It is the University's intention to procure the successful candidate for Lot 2 via a two stage competitive tender process (short-listed candidates only).
