The Enjoy England Awards for Excellence is a well-established national awards programme (running for over 21 years), designed to enhance and highlight the quality provision of the tourism industry in England and is run by VisitEngland, the national tourist board. Until 2011 the awards have been organised in the form of 9 regional heats, featuring approximately 15 categories, with the winners in each category going forward to be judged at national level. The cycle from entry into regional awards to the national ceremony currently spans two years, from January in the first year to April in the following year, when a black tie ceremony is held with upwards of 350 guests. (There is a further category which is judged by public vote and a travel journalist award organised internally by VisitEngland.) VisitEngland now needs to structure the awards in a different manner as a result of government funding cuts and structural changes within tourism. This is in part due to the dismantling of the Regional Development Agencies by March 2012. In particular, alternative ways of seeking and shortlisting applicants will be required from 2011 for the 2012 ceremony and sponsorship to eventually cover the full cost of the awards. Expressions of interest are invited on how the national awards can continue from 2011/12 and for the following years with a view of becoming cost neutral for VisitEngland by 2014 at the latest.
