The survey was previously conducted six times. Data collection was conducted in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Data collection for the 7th round is planned for autumn 2014. Over 30 countries have participated at least once in ESS. Norway has participated in all rounds. The purpose of ESS is to obtain good-quality and reliable data for research purposes such as: -- European attitudes and values and how these change -- showing how changes at the group level is related to institutional changes -- have a high degree of comparability between European countries -- creating understanding of the use of social indicators to assess quality of life in different European countries.
